Ethical Storytelling & Participant Protection
Those who trust us with their stories deserve to know we're committed to doing everything we reasonably can to protect them.
For incarcerated participants, that means informed and ongoing consent, protecting their identities, and taking precautions to minimize the risk of retaliation or other consequences of their involvement. Saving Throws will use animation and other safeguards to protect their identities while allowing them to share their experiences. We'll continue those conversations throughout production so participants understand how we're telling their stories and what risks their involvement may carry.
We also recognize that these stories extend beyond the individuals appearing in our film. Our responsibility to incarcerated participants doesn't diminish our responsibility to victims and their families. We have an obligation to respect their privacy and consider how our storytelling decisions might cause additional harm.
Saving Throws isn't about excusing past behavior. It's about exploring the potential for change through tabletop roleplaying games. This documentary will tell that story without sensationalizing the circumstances that led to incarceration, diminishing the harm suffered by victims, or compromising the dignity of anyone involved.
